Ready when you are.
This letter imagines two partners living apart for a while. It explores the ordinary details of distance without pretending that reading it creates a personal connection with the publisher.
Two different windows
By the time I open my curtains, you may already be halfway through your day. I have been thinking about that: two windows, different weather, the same small habit of looking outside before deciding what to wear. It makes the distance feel specific rather than endless.
I cannot sit beside you at breakfast in this story, but I can describe mine. The toast is slightly too dark. There is a bird on the fence behaving as though it owns the garden. The coffee is good. These are the things I would put in a real letter instead of trying to make every sentence impressive.
Room for separate days
I hope you are getting to know your new streets. Find a place you like enough to become a regular. Learn the name of the person who makes your lunch, if they want to share it. Build a day that feels like yours. I would never want being missed to make your world smaller.
There will be things we cannot explain perfectly to each other. A joke that belongs to your office. The particular smell of a bakery near mine. That is all right. We can be curious without needing to live identical lives.
A meeting in the middle
For now, let us meet in the details we choose to share. One photograph of a funny sign. A song. A sentence about something that surprised us. No running commentary required.
This imagined letter travels without a countdown. It ends with a hope, not a demand: whenever we next have time together, may we arrive with stories of lives we have continued to enjoy.
A note about this reading
This is an original fictional letter. The illustrated audio bubbles are cover art; any device read-aloud control is labelled separately.
A little pause. Another page when you’re ready.
