After the Awkward Silence: A Fictional Apology Letter
A fictional apology that takes responsibility and leaves the recipient free to respond.
Public creative writing · an imagined voice, not a personal message sent to you.

Ready when you are.
This is a scene in letter form, not a template that can guarantee forgiveness. Its narrator is apologising for interrupting a partner during an ordinary conversation.
What I got wrong
I have been thinking about our conversation at the table. You were trying to finish a story, and I kept replacing the end of your sentence with what I thought you meant. When you asked me to listen, I made a joke instead. That was dismissive, and I am sorry.
I do not want to hide the apology inside an explanation of how busy or tired I was. Those things may describe my day; they do not undo the way I spoke to you. You deserved the space to finish.
What I can do differently
Next time I will slow down and ask rather than assume. If I notice myself interrupting, I can stop. These are small actions I can take, not a grand promise that I will never make a mistake.
I would like to hear what I missed, if and when you want to tell me. You do not have to make the conversation comfortable for me, and you do not owe this letter an immediate answer.
Leaving room
I have put the kettle on, but it is not a signal that everything must be fine now. We can have separate quiet for a while. Repair in this fictional scene begins with taking the words seriously, not with insisting on a happy ending before bedtime.
For now, I wanted to say clearly what I should have said sooner: I interrupted you, I brushed aside your request, and I am sorry. The next part is not mine to write alone.
A note about this reading
This letter depicts a minor fictional disagreement. It is not guidance for abusive or unsafe situations, and an apology never obliges another person to resume contact.
